Lou Gehrig’s Disease, also known as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, is a progressive disorder that affects the upper and lower motor neurons of the central nervous system, more specifically, the brain and spinal cord. The disease causes degeneration of the neurons that control muscle movement. As the nerve cells are destroyed, the muscles throughout the body progressively weaken and in late stages of the disease, the individual can become completely paralyzed, eventually unable to chew, swallow, speak, or breathe.
